Vidal Blanc is the Cinderella of winegrapes - beautiful and productive yet under appreciated and not well known. Despite that it has been a cornerstone white grape variety in Eastern US vineyards for years. Since it was planted in our vineyard in 1983 it has always grown exceptionally well and produced wine of consistently fine quality. Vidal is a French-American hybrid (a cross between European and American grapes) and shares many of the characteristics of one of its parents, the Italian varietyTrebbiano. It produces wine with a fruity character even when vinified dry and always has good acidity which makes it a wine that goes very well with food. Vidal also is very versatile. In some regions, such as Ontario, it is used to make ice wine - thus it can make very good dry or sweet wines. We think that in New Jersey it makes a great dry table wine and that is generally how we use it. Made this way it often reminds us of one of our favorite Italian white wines, Orvieto |
